Facts & Figures
- Over the last 10 years, heating oil prices have dropped 18%.
When adjusted for inflation, heating oil is actually cheaper
than it was before the first oil embargo in 1973;
- The Northeast consumes 70% of the U.S. heating oil;
- Of the 101.5 million households in the United States, approximately
7.7 million use heating oil .
Reasons to Heat with Oil
- Home heating oil is not subject to any clean air requirements
-- it burns so cleanly;
- New oil furnaces operate as cleanly as gas or propane models,
and are significantly cleaner than wood-burning stoves;
- An oil system will warn you before releasing dangerous and
invisible carbon monoxide through the release of smoke, soot
or an odor. Gas heat equipment gives no warning of carbon monoxide
production;
- Fuel oil is measured in familiar gallons while gas heating
measures its usage in “therms”;
- Nothing beats the safety of oil heat. Unlike natural gas,
fuel oil is not explosive and inhalation of fuel oils cannot
be fatal;
- Oil heat bills are easy to understand. Gas heat bills contain
“mysterious” costs such as Gas Cost Adjustment,
and Weather Adjustment Clause;
- Oil Supplies More Hot Water: oil-fired water heaters will
heat water in half the time it takes.
Oil is Safe
- Home heating oil is nonexplosive and will not burn in a liquid
state;
- Oil does not carry a significant risk of carbon monoxide
poisoning;
- One of the cleanest combustion sources available;
- Heating oil is safe to the environment. It is non-toxic,
contains no carcinogens and is biodegradable.
Oil is Convenient
- Your dealer knows your usage patterns and automatically fills
your tank when it gets low.
Oil is Comfortable
- Heating oil creates the hottest flame of any home heating
fuel. It's 400º hotter than natural gas or propane and
makes electric heat and heat pumps shiver in comparison;
- Because it's so hot, your home heats up faster, needs less
fuel, maintains your desired temperature better, and just feels
more comfortable.
Oil is Good Value
- Because of Oil Heat's high BTU content, it costs less per
unit of heat produced. To equal the heat content of 1 gallon
of heating oil, it takes 1.4 therms of natural gas, 1.52 gallons
of propane, and 40.6 kwh of electricity.
- Did you know...According to the National Energy Board , prices
of gas are forecast to rise by up to 39% by the year 2010, while
the price of heating oil will rise only 4.4%;
- Nothing beats the safety of oil heat. Unlike natural gas,
fuel oil is not explosive and inhalation of fuel oils cannot
be fatal;
- Unlike Natural Gas, fuel oil is non-explosive. And, if an
oil furnace malfunctions, smoke, soot or an odor will warn you
before carbon monoxide is released. Natural Gas equipment gives
you NO warning of carbon monoxide production leaving you and
your family helpless should a problem occur;
- Oil heat bills are easy to understand. Gas heat bills contain
“mysterious” costs such as Gas Cost Adjustment,
and Weather Adjustment Clause;
- Fuel oil is measured in familiar gallons while gas heating
measures its usage in “therms”;
- By converting from electric, natural gas, and propane to Oil
heat you will lower your heating expenses by 2.5-5.5 times lower
than what you currently paying to your electric/gas company;
- Every year since 1990, gas prices have risen;
- Oil heats a home more evenly than gas heat;
- Home heating oil is neither flammable nor explosive and emits
far lower levels of particulates and hydrocarbons than gas;
- According to the Gas Appliance Manufacturers Association
oil heat systems are 10% more efficient than gas;
- When measured in constant dollars, heating oil prices have
declined while gas prices have increased significantly due to
expensive pipeline and utility costs;
- Oil heat makes faster hot water and more comfortable heat
than gas heat;
- According to the Department of Energy, oil heat systems are
16% more efficient than gas systems;
- A BTU of gas releases more pollutants than a BTU of oil;
- Oil heat produces less greenhouse gas than natural gas burners;
- Converting to gas heat can run you at least $3500, but upgrading
to a new oil system costs considerably less and can save you
25% in heating and hot water costs.
